Government Affairs Committee
Goals:
  1. Identify issues, interests and concerns as they relate to Local, State and Federal governments 
  2. Stay abreast of progress on issues of concern throughout the legislative session and report progress to the Chamber Board.
  3. Improve committee accessibility and visibility throughout the area
  4. Address other matters of local interest as they arise 
Objectives:

Projects & Tasks:

  1. Submit the initial 2010 BACC Legislative Position Paper for Board approval on September 15th 
  2. Beginning in September, monitor the state budget process and pre-filed legislation presented to local Delegates and Senators.
    1. Prepare draft recommendation for the Chamber Board of Directors to send to elected representatives.
    2. Update BACC Legislative Position Paper as necessary 
    3. Prepare preemptive strategies through elected representatives to preserve a healthy regulatory business climate 
  3. Schedule meetings in at least two other Bedford areas during 2009
    1. Schedule June meeting in Forest
    2. Schedule September meeting at Smith Mountain Lake 
  4. Monitor Bedford County's Zoning Ordinance Revision, and advise the Board and Chamber members on issues of concern 
    1. Ask Bedford County to present an educational overview of new Zoning Ordinance from a small to mid-sized business perspective by April 1st 2009. Invitation to this session is limited to Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce (“BACC”) Board of Directors (“BOD”) and Government Affairs Committee (“GAC”) members.
    2. Meet, develop and approve recommendations for Bedford County Zoning Ordinance, then present to BACC BOD for consideration and approval by April 8th
    3. Update BACC Legislative Position Paper as necessary

  1. Organize Wrap-up of Virginia legislative matters after session ends in April
    1. Schedule Legislative Wrap-up Breakfast to discuss outcomes of 2009 General Assembly session.
